Given our lengthy discussion of “old” and “new” media art,
how would you characterize the relationship between how
we experience (watch, listen, read, etc.) and create (shoot,
film, write, etc.) media art, and how has this changed?
When looking at the difference between old and new media, we must look at the way in which it is created and how different styles have changed over time to adapt to the change in consumerism. Over time the way that media is created has changed to fit the growing consumer market that is constantly changing. If you think about it, the concept of a phone has changed since the first telephone. My grandparents still own the telephone that brought them the news that World War II had ended. This phone is not even identical to anything remotely related to what a phone is today. The industry of media has had to keep up with the demand of the general public as the world advances. Media art changes along with its demands. What we experience also changes with the demands of the world. What used to be funny on a tv show can now be considered incredibly offensive. As we go about our daily lives and the way we understand, create, and experience media changes. Instagram is an example of this. What we see on Instagram can either make or break our day. What we chose to put on social media is our personal experience.
What does this burgeoning media ecosystem (with the
growth of “crowdsharing” and crowdsourcing) really mean
for us as a society? Why?
With the way that the media consumption environment is growing with crowd sharing and crowdsourcing the growth will just make the industry more interactive. crowd sharing and sourcing create a web of interactions making everything more easily accessible to the public. With the way that the ecosystem is constantly growing, the use of crowd-sharing and crowdsourcing only adds more fuel to the fire. Just like an ecosystem in the wild, it is constantly growing. With this large increase in media consumption, the world is just going to become more and more connected through media and the ways that it captures people’s attention. In my opinion, over quarantine, the media ecosystem really changed. Another platform like Tik Tok also changed the way that media is consumed by both crowdsourcing and crowd sharing. The app has a feature that learns your interests by what you like, as well as a sharing feature that allows you to share Tik Tok’s with your friends. Tik Tok, like Instagram has changed the way that others interact on social media as well as how companies use special tactics to make their apps way more addictive to their consumers.
